چکیده

In a comparative study, three di erent procedures of stabilisation techniques are considered for incompressible viscoelastic ow. The standard benchmark of ow past a sphere falling in a cylindrical vessel is employed to test these stabilisation techniques. First, discontinuity capturing (for stress) has been employed to investigate stabilisation properties. Then, the Zienkiewicz Zhu (ZPR-Q) quadratic patch recovery (for velocity gradients) is analysed and compared with a direct recovery technique. Finally, a third procedure is based on strain-rate stabilisation (for momentum). Results demonstrate that discontinuity capturing itself yields reasonable stabilisation properties, and quadratic patch recovery improves the solution somewhat over the linear version, but is not as stable as direct averaging. Strain-rate stabilisation also provides enhanced stabilisation properties comparable to those of discontinuity capturing. Computer Science Dept., Swansea Civil Eng. Viscoelastic Micropolar Convection Flows from an Inclined Plane with Nonlinear Temperature: A Numerical Study

An analytical model is developed to study the viscoelastic micropolar fluid convection from an inclined plate as a simulation of electro-conductive polymer materials processing with nonlinear temperature. Jeffery’s viscoelastic model is deployed to describe the non-Newtonian characteristics of the fluid and provides a good approximation for polymers. Micro-structural is one of the characteristi...

Time dependent finite element analysis of the linear stability of viscoelastic flows with interfaces

In this paper we present a new time marching scheme for the time dependent simulation of viscoelastic flows governed by constitutive equations of differential form. Based on the ideas of Carvalho and Scriven [J. Comput. Phys. 151 (1999) 534], a domain perturbation technique is introduced that can be applied to viscoelastic flows with fluid/fluid interfaces or free surfaces. This work mainly foc...

Numerical simulations of viscoelastic flows with free surfaces

We present a new methodology to simulate viscoelastic flows with free-surfaces. These simulations are motivated by the modelling of polymers manufacturing techniques, such as extrusion and injection moulding. One of the consequences of viscoelasticity is that polymeric materials have a “memory” of their past deformations. This generates some numerical difficulties which are addressed with the l...

Iterative Methods for the Solution of Integral Viscoelastic Equations on Parallel Computers

The objective of our work is to explore the potential of parallel computers in numerical simulation of viscoelastic flows. Viscoelastic flow simulations often result in ill-conditioned algebraic systems and, therefore, direct solution methods have been in vogue. But the main disadvantage of direct methods is their excessive storage requirements for large matrices, especially for three-dimension...

Finite Element Methods for Integral Viscoelastic Fluids

We review the field of finite element techniques for solving complex flows of viscoelastic fluids described by a constitutive model of the integral type. The focus is mainly put on mathematical formulations and numerical approaches. A short guide to published simulations of non-trivial flow problems is offered.
